I did some easy miles on the canal trail today, with about six 100 meter strides.  Just before I turned around I was coming up a hill in a grove of trees and ran into a badger standing on the side of the canal.  This badger was huge, and probably weighed about 60 pounds!  I had never seen a badger that close before, and certainly never one that big.  I didn't see him at first until he attacked from the side, growling and hissing.  I thought it was a raccoon or dog at first, until I saw that he was a bit slower and had claws as big as my fingers.  The next thing he knew was that he had been nailed in the side of head with a rock about the size of a golf ball.  He stopped for a second, looked a bit stunned, but still growing and hissing, until I talked him into going the other way with an even larger rock to the sideof the head.  I went about my run with no other problems.  I still can't believe the size of that thing, it must have been the Andre the Giant of badgers!  22:15

This is on the canal by the island? You mush put off some scent that attracts animals and provokes them to attack. Just wondering, were you already carrying the first rock in your hand the whole run, or did you actually have to pick it up first? How close was the badger?

I'm not sure it is safe for me to run with you anymore. I'm staying away from you tomorrow- with my luck, I would spend the whole race dodging a combination of your flying rocks and some mountain lions and moose chasing you.

Just wondering- have you ever beaned a squirrel in the head with a golf ball sized ball? Do rodents attack you as often as dogs, badgers, etc? I'm definitely staying away from you if there are skunks nearby.

I can't believe it...you should have someone with a camera follow you around in a jeep so you can make the video documentary "When Animals Go BAD!" Apparently, you are the perfect bait for grumpy fauna.

I will see you tomorrow. I want to meet up with you guys to get a good warm-up in. A badger? The skin on those are really expensive! You could get a lot of money for them.

Jon,

I was on the canal trail above Willard and I came up from behind the badger, so he was as scared as I was, but ended up with a worse headache. The badger was about five feet away when I first passed him, and about 15-20 when I nailed him. I did pick up the rocks. You can get to be a pretty good shot when you are a paper boy for 5 years.

Lybi,

That is what I get for running in the mountains in Northern Utah, you are bound to run into a few wild animals that don't appreciate you stomping through their turf. The badger thing was a surprise and kind of scary too, I have never had a run in with one, but have heard they are very mean. At least it wasn't a bear that was chasing me up in Island Park and Yellow Stone though!

I bet every one has doggy stories, I have dogs come after me every run just about, I just don't have too many conquering stories, so when they come along I have to tell.

Please do NOT run at Yellowstone! Let's keep you all in one piece so that we can all read your funny stories. I don't think a rock would dissuade an angry bison.
