Well not what I wanted to have happen for the day.  I knew if if I had some good conditions today I would have been flirting with sub 2:30, but that was not to be.  I met Clyde on the corner by the park waiting for Dave and sat on the bus next to him.  It was raining at the park and was quite warm so I knew we were in for it.  I was wishing I had another pair of shoes with me to keep my race shoes dry, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway.  It rained the whole time at the start and I tried to keep dry and warm under my emergency poncho and by the fire.

I took off by myself and ran the first three miles alone.  I picked up Cody and a guy named Ben and they drafted of me for a couple miles.  We picked Bill Cobler up a mile later and he drafted off me as well.  At Veyo hill we caught upto Steve Olsen and made a little group on the uphill section.  We plugged along until mile 11 where we caught Jon, Walter, Greg, Kory, and the rest of the sub 2:30 pace crew.  The next couple of miles were nasty and we were slowed down a lot by the wind.  Jon took off at this time and got way up ahead, some of the others dropped back, and Cody, Greg, Walter, and some other guy stuck with me.  We hit the half in 1:22:00.

The second half was just as bad or worse weather wise.  The winds kept up and it felt like we weren't going anywhere at times.  I lost touch of my little group for a couple of miles after Snow Canyon, but they returned around mile 17-18.  Greg went ahead with Walter for a mile or so and then dropped back with Cody.  Walter and I hung together for the next few miles and finally caught Jon at about 22.5 miles.  We pulled Jon along with us after that and ran the next couple of miles together.  My hamstrings were really feeling it these last few miles from the wet and heavy shoes.  With a couple miles to go I could see we still had a chance to go sub 2:40.  I started to push a little more and tried to pull Jon and Walter along.  But with one mile to go I knew I had to leave them if I wanted to go sub 2:40.  I pushed it the last mile and almost caught Jeff Mc and another guy but ran out of road.  I saw the clock turn 2:40 seconds before crossing the line, bummer!

I was as disappointed as anyone else.  Others have done more than double the training I have, but I new what I was capable of and didn't come close because of the weather.  I didn't feel quite as bad seeing how bad it hurt everyone else.  I was glad that I proved that I could still run with or ahead of all of the guys that were supposed to destroy me, like I knew I could.  Overall the run was a beast, headwinds and rain the whole way with no break.  I was wet after the first mile and things only got worse.  Worst weather in the history of the race!  The kicker was it was nice the day before and after.  I guess things could have been worse, so I'll just accept the terrible.  I did think that many people ran great for the conditions, good job to them!

Very impressive race with limited time to train! Nice Job!

From Superfly on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 10:41:16

Good race James. I think you would have been really close to a sub 2:30 if we would have had good conditions.

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 13:19:22

Stud. Way to go given the conditions.

From James on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 20:06:20

Thanks guys! I felt I did alright when comparing my race to other's around me. It was miserable for all!

From paul on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 21:36:26

Good job. Is that your best overall placing at St. George?

From MarcieJ on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 21:43:33

It was a tough day out there. Wait to go on pushing it at the end, I tried and my body said NO! It was nice seeing you down here.

From wheakory on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 22:23:39

Great race and time with the weather conditions the way they were.

I couldn't hang with you guys because I had to brown code and it cost me about 3 minutes, plus I had to stop to tie my shoe. I also got trampled at the start of the race, and that caused my hip to hurt the whole race. I was not anywhere near myself in running this race from the beginning because of the hip getting trampled on. I'm really sadden I couldn't run with you guys. It's the only reason I came down to run.

From Jon on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 23:58:49

Only being 7 minutes slow from last year is impressive. Nice job.

From James on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 00:05:47

Paul- That was my best overall place at St. George so far. I was glad to crack the top 20. Next year maybe the top 10.

Marcie- Good to see you as well. My body was screaming No too, but I figure that anyone can push it at the end if they dig down deep enough and care. I think I could have dug down sooner.

Kory- bummer that you couldn't stick with us after the long trip down. It was a bummer race had by many. But brighter days are sure to come to all of us.

From Greg on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 00:57:16

It was nice to meet you. Great job on that last 10K. You were moving. We'll have to go for sub-2:30 next year

From jtshad on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 09:45:07

Solid effort in the conditions and the reduced training this year. Way to break into the top 20! Great job!

From paul on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 09:53:01

There are definitely a lot of positives from your race, especially since you got a placing PR. Most people want to put all their marbles into their time, but racing is about placing. It's nice to get a good time too, but nobody can ever take Top 20 from you. Top 10 should be next. Also, your last 10K was faster than almost everyone else I've seen, so that's a positive too. Are you doing any winter or spring races?

From James on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 10:54:26

Thanks!

Greg- you can draft off me any race as long as I can get you in the end!:)

Paul- Top 20 was a definite plus for me. I haven't compared my last 10k to others, but I did feel and run strong considering the conditions.

Jeff- What people don't understand is that my mileage was less consistent this year, but I was building on last year's training and that helped. And although my quantity was less my quality of training was better. The lack of races is what hurt me more than anything.

From Brent on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 21:09:31

James, great race. Negative split on a tough day, impressive.
